“A down-and-out cameraman takes a job filming a hit reality show deep in the Louisiana swampland. As the full moon rises on the bayou, a beast awakens. Loup Garou is a one-shot horror story from the creative team behind the 2022 fan-favorite comic series, Endangered.”

Tired of the same old werewolf story? Tired of seeing them fight sparkly vampires? Then strap in for a ride through the swamps of Louisiana for Loup Garou, a supernatural horror one-shot, following the story of Craig, a cinematographer who takes a gig filming Bayou Life, a “redneck reality show” set in the Bayou.

On their first night filming the moon is bright and full in the sky and a fellow resident of the swamps warns them to stay home that night. What follows is a story of horror, gore, and myth that ends in a satisfying crunch.

John McCarthy has successfully taken on the daunting task of making us care deeply for the characters in a heart-pounding horror one-shot story. With deft craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, McCarthy weaves a narrative that effortlessly draws us into the lives of these characters. One character that will resonate with the audience is Craig. McCarthy endows him with relatable qualities and vulnerabilities that make him instantly recognizable.

As the story unfolds, an eerie sense of foreboding engulfs the narrative. The characters find themselves venturing into a murky, mysterious swamp. Amidst the darkness and uncertainty, what sets the characters apart is their genuine joy and enthusiasm for the creation of the reality TV show. Their camaraderie and infectious laughter create a stark contrast to the lurking danger that awaits them, intensifying the shock factor when the tables turn and their lives are threatened.

Ron Joseph is excellent on the pencils and with their rapport form working together on Endangered, this collaboration seems even more amped up and Joseph is able to show even more creativity in his art. The inking team complements and enhances the line work, providing just the right touch on the shadows to enhance the suspense.

Jorge Hov’s colors are dynamic and dark adding to the horror and suspense. The lettering by Garrett Berner utilizes great balloon placement and consistent style to keep the reader immersed. There is one “splash” sound effect that seems to pull me out of that immersion.

This one-shot leaves me with two questions: will there be more? Did anyone survive that will soon awaken as a werewolf? As a fan of his previous work in Endangered, I think this is John McCarthy’s best writing yet and am excited to see him explore the horror genre more.

If you’re a fan of the supernatural and want a horrifying trip through the Louisiana bayous you need to grab Loup Garou #1 from Blood Moon Comics!
